Can Europe Act? Power and Sovereignty in a Fragmenting World

Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Adam Tooze reflect on key geopolitical shifts, the challenges facing Germany, and lessons from his time in office

April 29 | Miller Theatre, Columbia University, New York

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung New York had the pleasure of co-hosting a timely and engaging conversation with Olaf Scholz, Former Chancellor of Germany, at Columbia University.

The evening began with a meet & greet bringing together German students and members of the Columbia faculty, followed by a substantive discussion on Europe’s role in an increasingly multipolar world. In conversation with Adam Tooze, Scholz reflected on key geopolitical shifts, the challenges facing Germany, and lessons from his time in office. The event was opened with welcoming remarks by Claire Shipman, Acting President of Columbia University.
The discussion highlighted the pressing question of Europe’s capacity to act strategically amid global fragmentation - from economic resilience to political leadership in times of crisis.

We are grateful to our partners, The European Institute at Columbia University and World Leaders Forum at Columbia University, for their excellent collaboration and for making this event possible. Many thanks as well to all participants for their thoughtful contributions and engaging, lively discussion. The full conversation is available here.
