Towards a WMD-free Zone in the Middle East: Introducing Novel Initiatives

An event organised by The Academic Peace Orchestra Middle East and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, together with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung New York Office.
The organizers have been active in recent years in promoting dialogue among stakeholders to overcome the current stalemate on the WMD-free Zone in the Middle East and avoid a new breakdown of the NPT Review Conference in 2020. The panel, composed of experts from or on the region and arms control, discussed new initiatives to this end. Such novel approaches include: the Russian proposal to make regional security a continuous part of the official agenda, the Arab initiative for a Conference within the UN General Assembly, the idea to discuss missiles on a regional basis, and an appeal to the Egyptian President to take the lead in allowing for an inclusive process to commence.
