Wealth, Power, and Democracy: A Political Agenda to Rein in Extreme Wealth

Global leaders discuss progressive taxation as a safeguard for justice, stability, and democracy amid rising wealth concentration

As unprecedented wealth concentration threatens democratic institutions around the world, a coalition of finance ministers, international leaders, and civil society advocates will convene to examine how progressive taxation can serve as both a tool for fiscal justice and a bulwark against democratic erosion. This high-level interactive panel brings together ministers, representatives from the IMF, prominent proponents of wealth taxation, and leading tax justice organizations to showcase emerging political momentum for taxing extreme wealth. Hosted by ICRICT and Open Society Foundations with the support of a coalition of international partners, this urgent dialogue will explore concrete strategies for coordinated political action against the systemic risks posed by billionaire influence over elections, media platforms, and democratic governance, while building bridges between tax justice advocates and democracy protection groups for sustained global impact.
