Challenges for Peace in Mali
“Perspectives from Africa: Challenges for Peace in Mali”
Luncheon Discussion, Monday, June 17, 2019 (1:15 pm - 2:45 pm)
Delegates Dining Room 1-3, UN Headquarters, 4th Floor
Since 2012, the Mali office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has been conducting the countrywide opinion survey “Mali-Mètre” in order to provide decision makers with an instrument for a better understanding of the political perceptions and aspirations of Malian citizens. Launched as a response to the recent multidimensional crises, the annual survey focuses on the political and socio-economic development, issues of security policy, conflict mediation and reconciliation as well as on questions of governance.
Given the important assistance of the international community to support peace and development in Mali, the most recent 10th edition of the survey has equally put emphasis on the public perceptions of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), the French military intervention Barkhane and the EU military and police training missions (EUTM and EUCAP Sahel).
At the event, FES Mali presented the main findings from Mali-Mètre 10 and discussed it with key UN stakeholders, such as Security Council members, UN Secretariat officials, and troop contributing countries to the UN peace operation. This was a particularly timely debate as the UN Security Council has to agree on a mandate renewal for MINUSMA by June 30.
The debate was part of the FES New York “Perspectives from Africa” series of discussion events. With these, FES wants to bring timely information from the work of its African offices and partner organizations to members of the UN Security Council and the UN at large.
