Launch Event: "Making 'Never Again' a Reality"

Tuesday, December 4, 2018 In January 2019, Germany will become a member of the UN Security Council. This provides the country with an opportunity as well as an obligation to honor its history by advancing atrocity prevention. Towards this end, at the request of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) New York, the Auschwitz Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR) wrote a policy brief to outline the challenges that lie ahead for Germany to make ›Never Again‹ a reality. The paper tackles internal as well as external impediments to atrocity prevention and makes concrete policy recommendations to overcome them. While the paper focuses on Germany, its analysis and recommendations are also valid for other – current or future – Security Council Members. This event thus featured a presentation by the authors on the policy brief and its proposal, and allowed for an off-the-record discussion with members from the German UN mission, other UN diplomats, and the UN Secretariat, as well as representatives from think tanks and academia. The discussion was followed by a reception. Opening:
